Guide to SCR, DPF, DEF, and EGR Removal for Detroit Diesel Engines

Disclaimer: This guide is for informational purposes only. Removing emission control systems is illegal in many jurisdictions and can result in penalties. Always comply with local, state, and federal laws.

Detroit Diesel engines, including DD13, DD15, and DD16 models, come equipped with an emissions control system consisting of a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). These systems are designed to reduce emissions but can cause maintenance issues and performance losses. This guide details the steps to remove these components properly.

Step 1: ECM Reprogramming

Before making any physical changes, the Engine Control Module (ECM) must be reprogrammed to disable the emission control features.

Why ECM Tuning is Necessary?

  • Prevents engine errors and diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs)
  • Disables limp mode
  • Optimizes engine efficiency and fuel economy
  • Allows the engine to run without DEF fluid or DPF regenerations

Professional ECM tuning is required to ensure the engine runs correctly. At DPF DELETE SHOP, we offer remote ECM tuning services to remove DPF, EGR, DEF, and SCR restrictions while maintaining engine safety.

Physical Modifications

After successful ECM reprogramming, proceed with the physical removal or deactivation of the emission components.

Step 2: EGR System Delete

EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) System

The EGR system recirculates a portion of the exhaust gases back into the engine’s intake to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. To deactivate:

  • Blocking EGR Flow: Install block-off plates on both the “hot” and “cold” sides of the EGR system.
    • Hot Side: Place a steel plate where the EGR manifold connects to the exhaust manifold.
    • Cold Side: Place a steel plate where the EGR manifold connects to the intake manifold.

On the photo below You will see place where block off plates(expansion plugs in this case) go.

  • Step 3: One-Box System Modifications (DPF, DOC, SCR Removal)

Detroit Diesel engines feature an integrated One-Box system containing:

  • Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC)
  • Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)
  • Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)

To modify these components:

DPF and DOC:

    • Remove the One-Box assembly from the vehicle.
    • Open the assembly and extract the filter materials from both the DPF and DOC sections.

  • DOC must be hollowed out as well, on the photo below arrows point out to DOC filter.

SCR DELETE:

    • The SCR unit is more complex due to its construction.
    • Carefully cut open the SCR housing.

Note: Modifying the One-Box assembly requires precision to ensure structural integrity and proper exhaust flow. It’s recommended to consult with professionals experienced in exhaust system modifications.

Post-Modification Considerations

  • Sensor Management: After removing or disabling emission components, address any associated sensors. This may involve disconnecting or simulating sensor inputs to prevent error codes.
  • Regular Maintenance: Even with these modifications, continue regular engine maintenance to ensure longevity and performance.
  • Legal Implications: Always consider the legal ramifications of such modifications. Operating a vehicle without mandated emission controls on public roads is illegal in many areas and can result in fines or other penalties.
