Description: Turbocharger/Supercharger Boost Control “A” Supply Voltage Circuit
Troubleshooting:
The (VGT) Variable Geometry Turbocharger Actuator is a self-contained component with
motors, sensors and a control unit.
The (VGT) Variable Geometry Turbocharger uses a movable nozzle to adjust the intake
manifold pressure for various operating conditions. Nozzle movement is controlled by an
actuator mounted on the tubocharger. When the Engine Control Module (ECM) Relay is
energized, a fuse supplies battery voltage to the (VGT) Variable Geometry Turbocharger and
the unit is grounded by means of the engine block.
Conditions for diagnostic trouble code (DTC):
1) The voltage at pin Y54:3 is more than 30 V
Observable symptoms
1) Engine de-rated
Probable cause
1) Battery charger connected
2) VGT actuator wiring harness
3) CHARGING SYSTEM

Troubleshooting:
Conditions for diagnostic trouble code (DTC):
1) Short circuit or open circuit
Observable symptoms
1) Low torque
2) Engine de-rated
Probable cause
1) Wiring harness between component connector and electronic control unit (ECU) connector
2) Damaged connector
3) Damaged or faulty component

Description: Intake Air Temperature Sensor 1 Bank 1
Troubleshooting:
The Boost Air Temperature Sensor is used to monitor the temperature of the air in the intake
system after the turbocharger. The sensor is a Negative Temperature Co-efficient (NTC) type
temperature sensor.
The sensor signals are used to calculation fuel injection and is monitored by the Engine Control
Module (ECM).
The engine control module (ECM) will set a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) and derate the
engine to avoid engine damage if the sensor signal is not within predetermined limits, or the
signal is not rational.
Conditions for diagnostic trouble code (DTC):
1) General Electrical Failure
Probable cause
1) Intake manifold air temperature (IMAT) and pressure sensor

Description: Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Range/Performance
Troubleshooting:
The Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor is a thermistor. The resistance of the Engine Coolant
Temperature Sensor changes inversely to the temperature of the engine coolant. When the
coolant is cold, the sensor resistance is high. As the temperature of the coolant increases, the
sensor resistance decreases.
The Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors the voltage drop across the Engine Coolant
Temperature Sensor.
The coolant temperature signal is used to calculate fuel injection and to evaluate operating
conditions of the engine coolant temperature. Examples of conditions that may cause high
coolant temperature are: thermostat failure, fan failure, heavy load, high ambient temperatures
and radiator blockage.
The sensor’s signal is monitored by the Engine Control Module (ECM).
The engine control module (ECM) will set a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) and derate the
engine to avoid engine damage if the sensor signal is not within predetermined limits, or the
signal is not rational.
Conditions for diagnostic trouble code (DTC):
1) The sensor signal is stuck
2) Sensor value does not change with changing conditions
3) Extreme variation in sensor values
Probable cause
1) Air in the coolant
2) Connector
3) Engine coolant temperature sensor
4) Wiring harness
